For several years now the price of the theory test has been fixed at £31.00. The time of day or day of the week is irrelevant (unlike for the practical test). There are no administration fees to pay, or extra charges for paying with a debit or credit card. It is simply £31.00.
You pay for your theory test at the time of booking, so paying by credit card is the simplest and easiest way. You can pay by cheque if you absolutely have to, but it involves a hell of a lot of hassle, when you can pay by card either over the internet or, if you’re still a bit suspicious of the worldwide web and its security measures, over the telephone.
The only way to be sure you’re booking the right thing, too, is through the DirectGov DSA website. They talk you through the whole process, and guarantee that your booking is secure, authorised and (most importantly) legal and at the correct price as laid down by the DSA.
WARNING: There are many, many sites out there which will try to let you book your test through them. Sometimes they’re a perfectly legitimate company… and sometimes they’re not.
Either way, third party sites will often ask you to pay an administration fee, or other fee, for the privilege of using their website. Don’t. If you go to the DirectGov website, you can book it through them without any extra costs. These third party sites are just trying to make money from you – don’t let them.
